Winter Fuel Payment is made to eligible individuals during the winter period to help with heating costs. Only those who have reached Pension Credit age are entitled to claim this payment, but can you claim Winter Fuel Payment if you live abroad?

What is a Winter Fuel Allowance?

The Winter Fuel Allowance is a one-off payment made during the winter to assist people with their heating costs.

The benefit is not means-tested and therefore does not depend upon one’s financial circumstances.

The annual tax-free monetary payment is made to most households between November and December and is available to any eligible individual in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Who is eligible for a Winter Fuel Allowance? What age do you get Winter Fuel Allowance?

One of the main rules for the Winter Fuel Allowance is its age-related criteria.

The payment is only available to persons of a certain age.

To claim this benefit you must belong to a household where at least one person is over State Pension age, which means you must have been born on or before April 5, 1954, to be eligible.

The current State Pension age is now 66 and is due to rise to 67 in the next few years.

Aside from age, to qualify for this payment you must have lived in the UK for at least one day of the qualifying week.

The qualifying week for 2020/2021 was between September 21 and 27, 2020.

However, you will not be eligible to claim this payment if you:

  • Live in Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Malta, Portugal or Spain due to their warmer climates.
  • Were in prison for all of the qualifying week
  • Lived in care or received certain benefits
  • Have been receiving free treatment in hospital for more than a year.

How to claim a Winter Fuel Allowance

Most people eligible for Winter Fuel Allowance do not need to claim this payment because tends to be distributed automatically to eligible individuals.

However, you will need to claim it if you have not had it before and any of the following apply:

  • You do not get benefits or a State Pension
  • You only get Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction or Child Benefit.
  • You get benefits or a State Pension but living in Switzerland or an EEA country.
  • You have deferred your State Pension, even if you had it before.
  • If your circumstances have changed.
