Sheffield United won a Premier League match for the first time in six months as Billy Sharp’s penalty sealed a 1-0 win over ten-man Newcastle.

It took 18 games, the longest winless start to a top-flight season in history, but the Blades finally have a victory, their first in the league since they beat Chelsea 3-0 at Bramall Lane last July.

VAR offered a helping hand by spotting a handball by Federico Fernandez in the 68th minute – and the resulting penalty was tucked away by substitute and club veteran Sharp.

While Chris Wilder’s side were good value for the victory, bossing from start to finish, they were given a huge boost when Magpies winger Ryan Fraser collected his second yellow card moments before half-time.

In some bizarre news, Fraser overtakes Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey as the shortest player ever to be sent off in the Premier League, standing at 5ft 3ins.

Newcastle fans are sure to be short-fused with both the Scotsman and their manager Steve Bruce amid growing complaints about the way their team are playing this season.

Sheffield United go to within nine points of safety – and perhaps this could be the beginning of a great escape.

They had to start somewhere.
