However, Tierney blew up a few seconds early when Liverpool forward Mane looked set to be in a one-on-one with United goalkeeper David de Gea.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp looked stunned on the sidelines, while Thiago Alcantara put his hands on his head.

Reds legend Graeme Souness was dismayed by Tierney’s decision.

He told Sky Sports: “He blows early, when it’s laid back here, watch, he’s blown.

“When you say ‘expected to play at least one minute more, is that a rule? Is that a law?

“He’s blowing early. Slightly frustrating for Liverpool, because he [Mane] was in.”

Replying to Souness, former Man City defender Micah Richards said: “It’s definitely controversial, but I think you’re clutching at straws there.”

Liverpool trailed league leaders Manchester United by three points heading into the game.

Red Devils midfielder Bruno Fernandes had the first-half’s best chance when his free-kick sailed inches wide of Alisson’s goal.

Alisson denied Fernandes and Paul Pogba late on in the second-half to preserve a goalless draw for the hosts.
