Jill Biden news: Future FLOTUS set to spend $1.2m on White House bathrooms | World | News

The White House is set for more renewal work under Ms Biden’s directions not long after the outgoing First Lady, Melania Trump, faced fierce backlash over her renovation commissions in the executive residence. Ms Biden will be supervising renovations in the East Wing, the section of the presidential building mainly used by the First Lady and her aides.

Federal procurement papers state that more than $1.2million will be used to upgrade the bathrooms, labelled as an “EW restroom refresh,” TMS has reported.

Holmes Mechanical Contractors have been tasked with the renewal of the spaces, set to be completed in May.

As well as extensive work in the bathrooms, there will be a $127,000 deep-clean ahead of the Bidens’ arrival in the White House, the news outlet added.

According to Hello!, $44,000 will also be spent on carpet cleaning services in the residence.

The news comes after outgoing First Lady was rocked by criticism after designing a makeover to the White House’s rose garden, an important landmark in the property.

Social media users unleashed their fury on Ms Trump for what they considered an unnecessary expense as US families suffered the economic brunt of the coronavirus pandemic.

Ms Trump announced the changes that were made in the garden in July, uploading photographs of the new garden on the official FLOTUS social media platforms.

She wrote: “Excited to honour history & celebrate the future in our beautiful @WhiteHouse Rose Garden this evening.

Another social media user added: “My family is one of those 30 million who struggle to have enough food, we depend on food banks when possible. It hurts to see Trump just waste taxpayers money on things like this!”

However, others defended Ms Trump, explaining that the renewal had been paid for by private fundraising.

One person said: “I read it was all paid for by private donors.”

Another user added: “White House officials said the renovations were paid for by private donations. They declined to reveal the cost of the work.
