Jake Paul has claimed he will knock out Ben Askren ‘faster than Jorge Masvidal’ did as the outspoken YouTuber directs his trash talk on the retired MMA star.
On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Paul will face former UFC fighter Askren in an eight-round professional bout in the ring.
The 24-year-old will face Askren on April 17 under the Triller Fight Club banner – the same organisation which hosted Mike Tyson’s exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr.
The internet personality has clamoured for a fight with Conor McGregor ever since he knocked out Nate Robinson in his second pro bout.
However, the Irishman has insisted he is focusing solely on his MMA career and is likely to seek an instant rematch with Dustin Poirier, who knocked him out at UFC 257 and Paul has now switched targets.
The YouTuber, nevertheless, is confident he can knock out Askren out faster than Masvidal’s famed flying knee at UFC 239.
In 2019, Masvidal left the former ONE Championship welterweight champion incapacitated on his back in just FIVE seconds when he landed a flying knee on him, sending shock waves around the world and transcending MMA.
“I started boxing two years ago and I’m still going to knock his ass out faster than Masvidal,” Paul told ESPN. “These MMA guys think because they throw punches they know how to box. The world complained because I knocked out a basketball player and not a real fighter. So now I’m giving the people what they want by taking on a ‘real fighter.’ After Ben Askren is added to my knockout meme collection, what can anybody say?”
Paul admitted he respects Askren for what he has achieved in MMA but insisted boxing poses a very different challenge.
“Askren has 20-something MMA fights has been in there with Robbie Lawler, he’s a tough guy,” he added. “I think anyone would have been knocked out by Masvidal’s knee. That knee that landed would have knocked anyone out.
“So I think Danis would have been the easiest one by far. But these MMA guys, just because they throw punches they think they can box. This is why I’m confident in my ability to destroy this guys. They have no head movement, they’re slow, they aren’t going to the gym every day and boxing.”
