“This trend will continue in 2021, meaning that many people, including furloughed employees, might not only find their role is no longer viable due to the economic climate, but also due to digital displacement.”

Mr Hanegan said the UK is facing its highest rate of unemployment for years, and has urged leaders and officials to tackle this escalating occurrence.

He explained: “The Government should set its sights on resolving the unemployment problem at its source through increased investment in upskilling.

“Not re-skilling as cake decorators or actors as the Government’s career advice tool suggested last year, but supporting the development of future-proofed skills – like digital and data competencies that are in demand today and will be in the future.”
