Daniel Cormier reveals Khabib chose not to embarrass Justin Gaethje in front of his parents

Khabib Nurmagomedov selflessly decided to not lock Justin Gaethje in an arm bar at UFC 254 as he knew the American’s parents were in attendance.

‘The Eagle’ proved himself to be one of the very best lightweights to ever set foot in the octagon when he finished the man many considered his most dangerous foe in just two rounds.

After taking about two minutes to read Gaethje, the Russian pressed forward relentlessly in the first round and finally secured a takedown with 30 seconds remaining.

Having moved to top mount, he looked to lock in an arm bar, but was denied a finish by the horn to signal the end of the round.

As the second round began, Khabib read the lead leg kick from ‘The Highlight’ and again secured top mount from the double leg take down and was poised to secure an arm bar finish.

But despite being moments away from retaining his title, the Russian showed incredible composure and MMA technique to switch instead to a triangle from the bottom to secure the win.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani, AKA teammate Daniel Cormier explained why Khabib did this and the reason behind it is simply incredible.

Cormier said: “He told me when he was watching the interviews over the course of the week, he saw that Justin said he would never tap. Justin would never tap.

So when he was going to the submission, he said it was his dad’s favourite position, into the mounted position going into the armbar, going into the triangle, he said it was his father’s favourite submission.

So when he got there, he was going to do the armbar. But he had heard Justin say all week that he would never tap and he didn’t want to hurt him in front of his parents. So he went to the triangle and just kind of put him to sleep.

“I promise you. He actually told me that. Where he goes, ‘I didn’t want to hurt him in front of his parents, so I said I’m going to put him in the triangle. If he goes to sleep, he goes to sleep, you wake up, you’re fine.’

“That’s exactly what he told me. He didn’t want to hurt Justin in front of his parents.”

Gaethje had just one request to Dana White for his massive title fight, which was to make sure his parents were in Flash Forum in the hope he could repay them for their years of financial and emotional sacrifice with a UFC championship belt.

Khabib was actually mourning the loss of his father and, despite the arm bar being his favourite manoeuvre; he could not honour his late father by embarrassing another man in front of his parents.

It is moments like this which cement the 32-year-old as the greatest lightweight of all time for his impeccable 29-0 record, but also his decorum and class outside of the octagon.

MMA journalist Gareth A. Davies believes the recently retired Russian ‘will live with us forever‘.

He said: “To be able to choose your own terms. To go out on your own terms in that way and not pick up a cheque for $100million for your next two fights.

“To not have Conor McGregor rematch. To do all those things, I think makes him a staggering sportsman. An incredible character in our sport who will live with us forever.”
