Dillon Danis was forced to quickly backtrack and delete a Tweet he sent out in the aftermath of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s victory at UFC 254.
The Bellator welterweight, who trains with Conor McGregor, let his fingers do the talking after watching the Russian move to 29-0 on Fight Island against Justin Gaethje.
Khabib forced the American to tap in the second round via a triangle choke, before breaking down in tears to announce his retirement.
However, Danis attempted to hijack the moment and wrote: “Khabib is retiring because he is scared of Conor McGregor”. Yet he swiftly deleted this Tweet after realising the error of his ways.
The Russian had arguably never lost a round in his professional MMA career, yet decided to leave while he was still at the very top in order to honour his late father and respect his mother’s wishes.
He said after the bout: “”Thank you to these guys with me, with my father more than 10 years. Coach Jav I love him so much. All my team. Thank you.
“Today I want to say this is my last fight. No way am I coming here without my father. When UFC comes to me about Justin I spoke with my mother for three days.
“She didn’t want me to fight without father and I said this is my last fight – and I have given her my word.
“Thank you so much Justin. I know you are great, I know how you take care of your people. Be close with your parents, because you never know what is going to happen tomorrow. Thank you coach, thank you guys. Today is my last fight in the UFC.
“It was my father’s dream. Justin and Conor (McGregor) will fight in January, I have choked both out, I am not interested in this.”
McGregor led the tributes to his Russian adversary on Twitter and put their rivalry aside to congratulate him on a stellar career.
