Britons who are currently experiencing very cold weather could be set to get a payment of £25 to help them through the period. The Cold Weather Payment scheme runs from November 1 to March 31 each year.

During this time, if the average temperature in a particular area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over seven consecutive days, a person may get a payment.

This is £25 for each seven days period of very cold weather.

It’s important to note the payment differs to Winter Fuel Payments.

Furthermore, Cold Weather Payments do not affect a person’s other benefits.

After each period of very cold weather in an eligible person’s area, they should get a payment within 14 working days.

This is paid into the same bank or building society account as the benefit payments.

Today, the DWP has confirmed a number of new postcodes have been triggered for a Cold Weather Payment.

These are:

  • CF37-48, CF81-83,
  • NP4, NP11-13, NP22-24, NP44,
  • SA9.

Baroness Stedman Scott said: “Keeping warm throughout the winter is hugely important to staying healthy, which is why we pay to help heat homes when there’s a sustained cold snap.

Those eligible don’t need to claim Cold Weather Payments, as they are instead paid automatically if a payment is triggered in the area.

That said, some people may need to tell Jobcentre Plus about their circumstances, or they won’t automatically get the payment.

This is if they get Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance and they have either had a baby or a child under the age of five has come to live with them.

It’s possible to check if there has been a Cold Weather Payment triggered in a particular area via the government’s Cold Weather Payment postcode checker.
