Charlotte Flair says Lacey Evans/Ric Flair creative was out of ‘left-field’ and talks WWE hiatus

For the first time in her WWE career, Charlotte Flair took an extended break in 2020.

The Queen, a 12-time world champion, took her first real bit of time off since her main roster debut in 2015. She got some well-needed rest, surgery to fix nagging injury problems and even began learning Spanish.

Ahead of the 2021 Royal Rumble, talkSPORT caught up with the 2020 Women’s Rumble winner to discuss her time off and the creative since she has returned.

“I definitely think the break was much-needed,” Flair said. “I definitely needed to handle personal things. But it really just put things into perspective. Being gone, I really missed my job.

“It was the first time since 2012 that I was spending the night, every single night in my own bed. Which was so super weird. But it just kind of gave me a chance to reboot, reset and I think come back in the best shape I’ve ever been in.

“Probably because I gave my body a break, I took like 9-10 week hiatus from the gym.”

Flair won the Women’s Tag Team titles on her first night back alongside longtime rival Asuka. However, at the same time, Lacey Evans has begun a relationship of sorts with her legendary father, Ric Flair.

The Asuka story seems to be something Flair wanted to happen. The Evans storyline with her dad? Not so much.

“Creatively, when I came back, to bring the Asuka rivalry full circle from thinking about WrestleMania 34 to being in her corner was mind-blowing. To me, Asuka has always been my mountain, but then while I was away, seeing her being the backbone of the RAW women’s division, her being the champ, she’s exactly where she should be.

“But with it being ‘Mania season, I really feel like I don’t know what’s going to happen! Right now, Asuka is the champ and I’m just waiting in line, or my turn for that opportunity.

“But as of right now, I feel like the title is where it should be and it’s in good hands,” Flair insisted.

“In regards to the Tag Team championships, we’ll be defending them this weekend at the Royal Rumble and we’ll see how that goes. I think Shayna and Nia as a team have come extremely far together and their kind-of-sisterly-friendship adds a different dynamic and it’s extremely entertaining.

“As for my dad and Lacey… yeah, I didn’t see that coming, to be honest! I think I’ve been so focused on building my own legacy, adding and protecting my father’s legacy as well as our relationship on screen coming full circle since 2015, that was really out of left-field for me.”
