The 19-year-old had to receive urgent medical attention, with pictures showing blood gushing down his face and United forced to see the game out with ten men.

His injury and the subsequent draw will come as a bitter blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, who squandered a 2-1 lead late on to drop two points at Old Trafford.

After the match, United boss Solskjaer said that he had not seen Williams as he was still receiving attention.

Meanwhile Red Devils captain Harry Maguire admitted his side were extremely disappointed that they conceded late on.

Maguire said: “We are disappointed. We got control of the game and had numerous chances to finish the game off. we were not at our best, there are loads of areas we could improve on but we did enough to win the game.

“They were a team with no pressure on them. We knew they would press – they press like mad and jump like mad and we didn’t handle it well for the first 20 minutes.

“We got back into the game but the second half was a bit of a slog, we were not good enough on the ball. We brought pressure on to ourselves but we felt we did enough to win the game.

“We have improved on defending set plays. We had a terrible record at the start of the season but have been really good on them. Can’t get in when we have four men around the goal so have to look at it.

“We are disappointed at the moment but we dust ourselves down tomorrow.”
