WWE Raw Women’s champion Asuka will defend her title against one-half of the Women’s Tag Team champions, Sasha Banks, this Sunday at The Horror Show, Extreme Rules.
Banks has been on fire for the past few months alongside her best friend and SmackDown Women’s champion Bayley and The Boss is trying to become a double champion as well.
However, Asuka has been one of the best female talents in WWE and even the world for a few years now and she has taken the mantle as the standard bearer on Monday nights after Becky Lynch departed to concentrate on her pregnancy.
talkSPORT caught up with Asuka on Wednesday – with the help of SmackDown’s number one announcer Funaki helping translate – and we asked her about that special moment.
“It was a total surprise, a huge surprise,” Asuka said, confirming reports that suggested she wasn’t privy to Lynch’s plans.”It really was so special and I’m so happy. Happy I won the title, happy for Becky. It was a great moment I felt lucky to share.”
Speaking of reports, there have also been some rumours that her tag team partner Kairi Sane will depart WWE this summer when her contract expires. While talkSPORT has learned that WWE plans to make her an offer in a bid to convince her to stay, we asked Asuka about the rumours and what Kairi means to her.
“Kairi is very, very special to me. She brings out the best in me and I love being around her. When I am finished with Sasha, I want to face Kairi next!
“Kairi and I have never faced each other in WWE or in Japan or anywhere else, ever! So that match would be really special.”
There had been some reports that WWE were going to build to a career-ending match between Asuka and Sane to explain the departure and while after Extreme Rules is SummerSlam, all we have is Asuka’s word that she wants to face her tag team partner at this point, nothing more.
But do we want to see it? Absolutely!
Elsewhere in the call, Asuka also mentioned that if Evolution 2 was to happen, she’d want to face NXT star Rhea Ripley.
