Amazon warning: Britons targeted by scam ‘Amazon Prime subscription’ phone call | Personal Finance | Finance


Amazon is used by millions of Britons to make purchases, and with the national lockdown closing many shops, it is likely to be convenient for many. However, people are being urged to keep aware of a new telephone scam, which seeks to defraud them. Several people have reported receiving a phone call which informs them they have been charged a sum out of their Amazon account.

The scam is associated with Amazon Prime, a paid subscription service, which often helps people get faster delivery, or access to additional, exclusive content such as films or TV programmes.

Research in 2019 showed the number of Britons signed up to Amazon Prime has hit 15million, so there is a potential for a large net to be cast by the scammers.

The phone call then goes on to tell those who pick up the phone that they will need to press one if they wish to “cancel” the payment. 

However, the message has been uncovered as a scam, designed to persuade Britons to part with their personal details.

They have urged people to stay alert if they receive a similar phone call purporting to be from Amazon. 

One said: “Just had a phone call claiming to be Amazon – it said my subs would be taken this week, and that if I pressed one, I could speak to a manager. This is a SCAM – hang up and report!”

Another wrote: “Scam phone call this morning. Picked up the landline to a recorded message.

“It thanked me for renewing my Amazon account for £79.99, I was then invited to press one to cancel.”

Thankfully, Amazon has provided guidance to help those who think they may have been targeted by a scam.

The company has explained emails, text messages or phone calls from Amazon will never ask someone for their personal information.

It will also never ask for remote access to a device, for example, by asking someone to install an app. 

The company has urged Britons to not share any sensitive details, and to “disconnect the call immediately”.

Amazon also told customers to report the call as a phishing scam to Action Fraud, the national cybercrime reporting service.

Action Fraud may be able to take further action to resolve the matter and stop the scam from targeting unsuspecting victims.
